[14 Jun 2018] Statement on Copyright Infringement Case, Televic v. TAIDEN

Statement on Copyright Infringement Case, Televic v. TAIDEN

Televic Conference, manufacturer of conference system based in Belgium, filed a lawsuit in October of 2016 against TAIDEN for copyright infringement on the GUI (graphic user interface) of its Lingua Interpreter Desk, claiming that its “original” design of using rectangular blocks further divided into sub-blocks to indicate audio quality was “copied” by TAIDEN. The Commercial Court of Brussels rendered judgment in favor of Televic, which grants Televic Conference EU-wide injunctive relief. The court decision orders immediate recall and update of the GUI design along with a series of other wide-ranging measures applicable to the product.
TAIDEN would like to make an open announcement pursuant to the case.
1. The GUI currently used in TAIDEN´s interpreting system, depicted hereinafter, is not affected by the judgement of the Court of Brussels:
2. Neither the installed TAIDEN interpreting system nor the system to be installed will be affected by the judgement either. The judgement of the Court of Brussels only refers to the following, former GUI:
3. The judgement of the Court of Brussels is unfounded and not final. An appeal shall be filed with the Brussels Appeal Court in the upcoming days.
It has long been an industry practice to use upright rectangular blocks that are divided into several sub-blocks to indicate electrical level and audio quality on audio-visual products. It is obvious that the rectangular blocks used by Televic are not exceptional or original, and the mere use of these blocks can therefore hardly be accounted as an expression of the personality of the author.
For more than 22 years, TAIDEN has provided proprietary and innovative quality conferencing solutions to its customers. It respects the intellectual property rights of others, but values its own on an equal basis. It is therefore committed to defending itself from ill-willed and unfounded charges and confident to win the dispute.
TAIDEN respects the law no matter how biased and excessive it believes the decision is. It will work with all partners to proceed upon the customers’ approval in a discreet and efficient manner that does not affect the functionalities of the already installed interpretation systems.
TAIDEN always upholds high standards of business integrity and transparency, and therefore is willing to clarify any doubts or concerns from its customers on the interpreter unit. More information about the progress will be shared on a timely basis.
